Using printers with Business Central

This page explains how to set up printing in Business Central SaaS — both interactive (user-initiated) and unattended (automated) scenarios.

Attended printing

Users can print any report to locally available printers if the report is printed in interactive way - it means when print dialog is displayed. User then can select any printer available for the browser in standard way. This is "client-side printing" when the printout is done by web browser/client.

Unattended printing

When there is process which needs to print something without user interaction (no print dialog is displayed, printing is part of another process or is scheduled through Job Queue), the printer must be available in some way for the server-side printing. In SaaS it means that the printer must support:

  • Email printing (printing by sending the pdf to specific email address, email functionality must be configured in Business Central — see Email Setup)
  • Microsoft Universal Print - you need correct MS license for it too
  • other Cloud-printing technology with existing Business Central support (through 3rd party app from AppSource) like PrintNode

Pull printing

In case you need to use pull printing, it is recommended to check if the print driver supports it in a cloud-compatible way. Depends on vendor and technology used. It is recommended to think about other possibilities/alternative ways how to deliver same functionality, like using digital copies only delivered through email, integrations etc. instead paper print-outs.
